Spend time with Maurie Pickering and this is what you learn – they are more than mere words, such feeling and passion easily heard in his voice, which sometimes wavers, given the love he holds for motoring. It’s been his life and continues to be.

On a warm (well, for the blow-ins from the southern states who haven’t spied a summer in two years the wind certainly held a welcome temperature) Friday we joined the Pickering patriarch, his family and a collection of clients for a lavish run through the stunning hinterland that frames the western fringes of the Gold Coast.

For Pickering and his acclaimed business, Pickering Luxury Garage, such gatherings are important – a chance for owners and friends to ‘stretch the legs’ of a favoured vehicle and an opportunity to come together and forge a community.

For those in the area the convoy proved a splendid sight – a heady collection of vehicles running out of the dealership in Bundall; a multi-million dollar gathering of marques that included Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Mercedes, Audi and which ran through models inclusive of Huracan Spyder, F8, 911 GT2RS, SLS Gullwing, R8 and AMG GTs (plural), among others.

The first stop provided an opportunity to be both educated and fed – Gold Coast Motor Museum in Coomera an inspiring gathering of cars past and present, as driven and presented by a man equally passionate for motoring, co-founder Carl Amor. Here, at the attached Stanley’s Barn lunch and conversation flowed – so too the connection among enthusiasts that Pickering aims to achieve with lavish drive days such as this.

Back on the road and a chance to test things (legally, of course) against a blur of thickset tropical fauna and roads that slowly started to climb and twist – onwards to an evening at Beechmont’s award-winning Hazelwood Estate.

 Over a sumptuous dinner paired to some impeccable wines, those gathered settled in to tell their stories and further explore their automotive passions. Here, the power of what some outsiders simply view as a ‘car’ is tangible and proves so much more than simply a sum of its parts. These are machines of inspiration and aspiration; to be loved and cherished and representative of dreams and achievement.

And it’s just as Maurie Pickering wants it.
