Ferrari Unveils The Unhinged 756 kW SF90 XX Stradale And Spider
For the past couple of decades, Ferrari has finessed its performance credentials through its special series lineup, responsible for the likes of the 488 Pista and 812 Competizone. During the same time, the Italian marque has experimented with some very-non-road-legal vehicles through its XX Programme, which can be driven to the limit on the track by select clientele at Ferrari-organised events. Now, Ferrari has amalgamated the findings of both spheres to create a bonkers duo — the SF90 XX Stradale and SF90 XX Spider.
The redacted pair build off the already delightfully high performance SF90 series, utilising the same 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, augmented by three electric motors—two mounted on the front axle and one between the engine and gearbox at the rear. Thanks to the addition of new pistons, re-machined combustion chambers, increased compression ratio, polished inlet and track exhausts, and improved cooling, the XX variants are able to deliver 756 kW—that’s a 22 kW improvement over the ‘standard’ issue SF90.
A power bump courtesy of “patented extra boost vehicle dynamics logic” sees the trio of electric motors produce a maximum of 171 kW combined, with a 25km range in full-electric mode. When the ICE is not in use, the front motors allow for a maximum speed of 135 km/h.
But really, who’s driving it like that? When used as—the spirit of Enzo Ferrari—intended, the SF90 XX Stradale and Spider race from 0-100km/h in a cool 2.3 seconds with a top speed of 320km/h. Both figures representing a level up on the regular SF90 numbers.
In a move somewhat reminiscent of a Mario Kart game, the Extra Boost function uses the electric motors to deploy more power in shorts bursts of up to two seconds when hitting ‘Qualifying’ mode on the eManettino selector.
The newcomers also feature a recalibrated soundtrack befitting of its power, something Ferrari describes as “a wonderfully rich explosion of iconic Ferrari V8 sound”. Fun!
Aerodynamic performance is significantly enhanced through the oversized fixed rear wing, as well as the new front splitter, revised front door, and the innovative stop-Gurney system that sees the panel between the rear wing stanchions lowers to expose a Gurney flap that boosts rear axle downforce while braking. At 250km/h, the SF90 XX boasts 530kg of downforce, a 36 percent increase over the standard variant at the same speed.
Inside, the motorsport aesthetic continues, with an Alcantara dash and sports seats complemented by lashings of carbon fibre on the door panels, centre console, and floor. Weight-saving measures result in simple forms being employed, including racing seats that are 1.3kg lighter than that of the SF90.
For those who prefer to drive en plein air, the Spider variant doesn’t compromise on aerodynamics. Just 100kg lighter than its Stradale sibling, the SF90 XX Spider has the same aerodynamic performance, with the retractable hardtop able to be deployed in 14 seconds at speeds of up to 45km/h.
Ferrari is limiting production of the SF90 XX Stradale and SF90 XX Spider to 799 and 599 examples respectively, with the vehicles priced at approx. $1.5 million and $1.7 million. Naturally, all have already been accounted for.
