Koenigsegg Gemera gets world's most powerful V8 engine
Swedish hypercar specialist Koenigsegg has unveiled the production version of its first four-seat model, the Gemera.
The new Koenigsegg, which was unveiled as a concept three years ago, now offers customers a choice between two engine configurations. In addition to the 2.0-litre three-cylinder turbo hybrid system originally planned, buyers now have the option of a revised version of the 5.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 motor found in the Jesko hypercar, paired with a plug-in hybrid system.
With the so-called ‘Dark Matter’ V8 option, the Gemera is said to become the world's most powerful production car, delivering a combined 1692kW and 2750Nm to all four wheels.
The hybrid Gemera can still be ordered with the twin-turbocharged 2.0-litre three-cylinder 'camless' engine and a plug-in hybrid system good for 1045kW and 1850Nm.
The three-cylinder petrol engine, dubbed the Tiny Friendly Giant (TFG), claims estimated fuel consumption up to 20 per cent lower than a traditional 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, according to Koenigsegg, but can still accelerates from 0-100km/h in a claimed 1.9 seconds and achieve a top speed of 400km/h.
The Gemera's plug-in hybrid system incorporates a battery pack that provides a maximum electric driving range of 50km, resulting in a total driving range of 1000km when the engine is in use.
To handle the immense power output of the V8 hybrid model, Koenigsegg has adapted its nine-speed 'Light Speed' transmssion from the Jesko to create what it dubs the 'Tourbillion Transmission'.
As with all Koenigsegg vehicles, the Gemera will be exclusive, with production limited to just 300 vehicles worldwide and a starting price of $1.7 million (AU$2.5 million).
